On Campus: Auburn and Southern Union’s Aviation Mechanic Partnership

Auburn and Southern Union's aviation mechanic partnership

Training within the aviation industry is reaching new heights from the ground up. And it’s thanks to Auburn and Southern Union’s aviation mechanic partnership that set sights on addressing the industry’s aviation mechanic shortage.

About the new partnership

Last month, Auburn and Southern Union’s aviation mechanic partnership was announced through Auburn University’s Office of Communication and Marketing. According to reports, a state-of-the-art hangar will be constructed for use in Southern Union’s Aviation Maintenance Technology Airframe and Powerplant programs.

These concentrations prepare students to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, service and maintain most aircraft components. Those in the airframe program learn about the layout and fabrication of sheet metal, fabric, wood and other materials into structural members, parts and fittings. Students also learn how to replace damaged or worn parts like hydraulic units and control cables.

Students in the powerplant program focus on a range of skills. These consist of skills needed to repair, service and maintain various aircraft powerplants and related systems. This includes engine inspection and maintenance, lubrication and cooling, electrical and ignition systems, carburetion and more.

More about the partnership

Auburn and Southern Union’s aviation mechanic partnership aims to prepare students to fill the gap in qualified aviation maintenance technicians. This partnership couldn’t come at a better time!

According to Boeing, the aviation industry needs to recruit, train and hire about “716,000 new maintenance technicians” within the next 20 years to keep up with global air travel demands. Between the Auburn University School of Aviation and Southern Union’s new Aviation Maintenance Technology program, the aviation campus developing at the Auburn University Regional Airport is poised to make a difference in the industry for years.
